This Cat Should Click the SuperLucky Button

If you thought that black cats were unlucky, it's time to reconsider. A wildlife rescue facility operated by the Scottish SPCA reported this week that a young cat wandered into its rescue center earlier this week with a metal can of food stuck over its head. It is unclear how the cat made its way to the front door of the SPCA, but no cars were seen in the area and it is believe that the cat did not have any human assistance. 

Rescuers quickly removed the can and helped the dehydrated cat regain strength. According to staff at the facility: "Luckily no damage was done and the little cat was very pleased to be freed from the discomfort that comes with having your head stuck inside a tin can.We think it's likely that she was scavenging and came across this discarded tin of cat food. She may have got the can stuck on her head and then became disorientated, it's lucky she wasn't hit by a car."

Unlucky Swiss Driver Gets $290K Traffic Ticket

The BBC is reporting that a motorist in Switzerland has just received a speeding ticket in the amount of $290,000, proving that not everybody is as lucky as SuperPoints members are.

The violation was for driving 85mph in a 50mph speed zone. Fines in Switzerland are based on the assets of the violator, who in this case had nearly $23 million in his bank account at the time of the incident. The man was driving his red Ferrari Testarossa through a village when he was busted. He is reported to also own a villa and four other luxury cars.

The fine doubles the record for the costliest speeding ticket in the country, formerly held by the the driver of a Porsche, who was caught in a similar incident in 2008. In the judgment, the Swiss court summed it up rather succinctly by saying, "The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed."

Treasure from the Atocha Goes on Display

A Florida museum will display coins and artifacts recovered from the famous shipwreck of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sank in a hurricane in 1622, way before CNN and Weather.com were around to warn the hapless sailors.

The wreck was discovered by treasure hunter Mel Fisher around the Florida Keys in 1985 and included nearly $500 million in precious metals, jewels and emeralds.

Artifacts from this amazing discovery will be on display on January 16 and 17 at the Cape Coral Historical Museum.

A Lucky Trip to the Restroom

The Associated Press in London recently reported that a rare first edition of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" was found on the bookshelf above a toilet in a family's guest bathroom in the town of Oxford, in southern England.

Christie's Auction House said that the book is one of around 1,250 copies printed in 1859 and estimated the book was worth nearly $100,000.

In the book, Darwin outlined his theory of natural selection — the foundation for the modern understanding of evolution.

Celebrations around the world this year have marked the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth, making the discovery even more serendipitous.
